ARC offers a one-source approach for airport master-planning combining traffic forecast, technical planning and airport simulation for capacity related questions.

Project Overview

Moscow Sheremetyevo is the hub of Aeroflot and a key airport in Russia. In order to cure operational and infrastructural deficiencies a new master plan and master operating plan had to be developed. This task included a redesign of the terminal building and a replacement of the baggage handling system.

Services provided

The new master plan should summarise the required expansions for the future considering the entire airports infrastructure. Beside the airside infrastructure (taxiways, apron) and the terminals the master plan also included airport access areas/roads, catering areas, cargo, fire brigade, workshops, maintenance halls and offices, etc. The master plan was based on various traffic scenarios. This approach enabled a most flexible adjustment of the master plan to the actual future traffic development.

Subsequently detailed planning was carried out for the chosen variant including structure, air conditioning, lighting, baggage handling system, security system, concept for fire prevention and interior design. This task included detailed computer-aided simulations of all relevant topics.

On the basis of these results ARC developed the planning of the project management for the realisation of the construction and technical equipment. Afterwards ARC collected quotations for all main building sectors and determined the pricing of the building operations. Finally ARC prepared international tender documents for the BHS bid process (specification and detailed design of a new baggage system, tender management).

Results and Benefit

With the services provided, ARC offered Moscow Sheremetyevo a single source approach for a complex planning task. The result was a comprehensive masterplan including all airport facilities which also included different terminal concepts with complete functional and design planning. In order to continue with the bidding process for the construction, ARC provided the client with an extensive technical documentation and preparation of international tender documents.
