Airspace capacity

Definition of Airspace capacity

Airspace capacity is defined as the maximum number of aircraft that can be safely and efficiently managed within a specific part of the airspace over a given period.

It is determined by factors such as runway configuration, air traffic control (ATC) system capabilities, operational performance standards, and sector design.

Additional influences include the controller performance (quantitative and qualitative, communication infrastructure, the mix of aircraft type, as well as rules, procedures and restriction.

Effective airspace capacity management aims to balance traffic demand with service quality while ensuring safety and efficiency in air traffic operations.
